Anywhere

Yawning Portal has produced one of my favorite songs of all time, which is a very ambient remix of Cut to the Feeling. The EP which included this remix had a couple other fairly interesting tracks, and so I had been listlessly waiting for a more substantial debut from them — or at least a sign they were still alive.

This album is both! And it is interesting, but does not exactly contain the promise and propulsion of their previous output, perhaps an unfairly high standard. To their credit, the delayed gratification almost feels intentional; this is not an album that hints at listlessness, and so I suspect they are in fact more interested in the ambient, vaporwave-adjacent soundscapes than I am.

Still, there are a couple needle-drop moments — I will try to listen to this a few more times and train myself to surrender to it — but it does not immediately evoke the eschaton quite like that CRJ remix did.
